You might say that I’m a work in progress.

When reading “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” in Matthew 5:48, one might think God wants us to be perfect. They link perfection to lack of mistakes. While that may be true physically, it is not true spiritually.

The Greek word for “perfect” in Matthew 5:48 is “telios” meaning finished, full grown, mature, lacking nothing, or brought to completeness. It has nothing to do with making mistakes or not being good enough. The good news is that we are already perfect in God’s sight. We are reconciled through Jesus Christ and He lives in us. With Christ in us, we are brought to completion and we lack nothing.

While it’s true that God does not require us to be perfect, He does want us to make progress. He wants us to continually grow in grace and knowledge which is a daily process (2 Peter 3:17-18).

Our Christian journey will have many ups and downs, but we don’t need to worry if we yield to God. We are assured that God will be faithful to complete the work He starts in us (Philippians 1:6).

“Being confident in this very thing, that He who has begun
a good work in you will complete it…” ~Philippians 1:6

Today is the day the Lord has made… I will rejoice today because life is about progress, not perfection.
