{"id":422,"date":"2011-05-01T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T14:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/?p=422"},"modified":"2011-05-09T14:18:34","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T19:18:34","slug":"too-close-to-the-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/?p=422","title":{"rendered":"Too Close to the Edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/628300-rough-sketchy-drawing-style-illustration-of-a-fenced-off-cliff-edge-with-warning-sign.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/628300-rough-sketchy-drawing-style-illustration-of-a-fenced-off-cliff-edge-with-warning-sign2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-454\" title=\"628300-rough-sketchy-drawing-style-illustration-of-a-fenced-off-cliff-edge-with-warning-sign\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/628300-rough-sketchy-drawing-style-illustration-of-a-fenced-off-cliff-edge-with-warning-sign2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a>Years ago I heard a story about a wealthy woman who advertised for a new driver.\u00a0 She asked the three applicants this question:\u00a0 \u201cHow close to a cliff could you drive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first man said he could drive within an inch of the edge of the cliff.\u00a0 The second made the same claim.\u00a0 The third said, \u201cI really couldn\u2019t tell you because I try to keep as far away from danger as I can.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whom do you think she hired?<\/p>\n<p>There is a lesson in this story for all of us.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say the edge of the cliff is temptation.\u00a0 Do we risk getting as close to edge as possible without thinking of the possibility of falling off?\u00a0 Or do we stay away from danger?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We all have weaknesses.\u00a0 If we know what our weaknesses are, perhaps we should avoid putting ourselves in situations where we would be tempted to succumb to them.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are tempted to overeat, stay away from Hometown Buffet.<\/li>\n<li>If you are an alcoholic, stay away from bars.<\/li>\n<li>If you are a drug addict, stay away from drug addicts.<\/li>\n<li>If you are a shopaholic, stay away from Macy\u2019s (and cut up your credit cards).<\/li>\n<li>If you have a gambling problem, stay away from Vegas.<\/li>\n<li>If you are depressed, stay away from negative people.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speaking of negative people, remember that who you hang around with makes a difference.\u00a0 You want people in your life who support staying away from temptation, not encourage it.\u00a0 \u201cBad company corrupts good character.\u201d \u00a0(1 Corinthians 15:33 NLT)<\/p>\n<p>Temptations will always be around.\u00a0 After all, even Jesus was tempted by the devil.\u00a0 Today\u2019s culture is particularly ripe with enticements and each day we face a myriad of opportunities to do what in our hearts we know is wrong.\u00a0 However, how many of us when given a choice purposefully come as close to the edge of temptation as possible thinking we won\u2019t fall off?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Remember that it is easier to avoid temptation than overcome it.\u00a0 In speaking of paths of the wicked the bible says:\u00a0 \u201cAvoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.\u201d (Proverbs 4:15)\u00a0 I think the same would apply to temptation.\u00a0 In other words, stay as far away from danger as you can!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago I heard a story about a wealthy woman who advertised for a new driver.\u00a0 She asked the three applicants this question:\u00a0 \u201cHow close to a cliff could you drive?\u201d The first man said he could drive within an &hellip;
