{"id":383,"date":"2011-03-20T09:00:18","date_gmt":"2011-03-20T14:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/?p=383"},"modified":"2011-05-09T14:54:34","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T19:54:34","slug":"the-kings-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/?p=383","title":{"rendered":"The King&#8217;s Speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The King&#8217;s Speech<\/em>, a low budget movie not expected to please the masses, slowly emerged on the scene and touched the heart of all who saw it.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a long time since I was excited to see a movie walk away with several academy awards, but it was worth sitting through Franco and Hathaway to see The King\u2019s Speech take director, writer, and picture of the year awards \u2013 and of course best actor winner Colin Firth.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I must admit I, like so many women, have had a \u201cthing\u201d for Firth ever since the A&amp;E mini-series Pride and Prejudice. It was nice to see him perform in something again worthy of his talent.\u00a0 A myriad of people contributed to the success of this movie, but it was the subject matter itself that had so many giving standing ovations in movie theaters across America.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_474\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/210px-King_George_VI_of_England_formal_photo_portrait_circa_1940-19461.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-474\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-474\" title=\"210px-King_George_VI_of_England,_formal_photo_portrait,_circa_1940-1946\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/210px-King_George_VI_of_England_formal_photo_portrait_circa_1940-19461.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King George VI of England<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>The King\u2019s Speech<\/em> is the true story of how King George VI, father of the current Queen Elizabeth, became king when his brother David abdicated the throne to marry Wallace Simpson.\u00a0 Years ago, I remember people romanticizing the debonair brother who gave up everything for love. Yet, to me, the greater courage and sacrifice came from the man who reluctantly became king in spite of his debilitating stutter. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was a time when stuttering would not impede a personae.\u00a0 Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Aristotle, Roman Emperor Claudius, and Lewis Carroll were just a few famous stutterers.\u00a0 And perhaps King George VI would not have been as terrified if it weren\u2019t for the advent of radio, which magnified his problem for all to hear.\u00a0 In spite of his trepidation, he chose duty over preference and became the king who leads his country through World War 2.<\/p>\n<p>I had a beloved uncle who stuttered so I saw firsthand how difficult it could be to just get through one sentence.\u00a0 With speech therapy and developing certain speaking habits many people have learned to survive and even overcome this obstacle, but it\u2019s not an easy process.\u00a0 Here are a few people who did just that:\u00a0 Theodore Roosevelt (president), Winston Churchill (British statesman), Bruce Willis (actor), James Earl Jones (voice of Darth Vader), Carly Simon (singer), Tiger Woods (golfer), and Joe Biden (vice-president).\u00a0 This list could go on and on.<\/p>\n<p>Another man with a speech impediment went on to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt.\u00a0 His name was Moses.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want his job either.\u00a0 He told God, \u201cBut my Lord, never in my life have I been a man of eloquence, either before or since you have spoken to your servant.
