{"id":3384,"date":"2016-04-10T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T14:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/?p=3384"},"modified":"2016-05-01T20:56:08","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T01:56:08","slug":"choose-to-sing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/?p=3384","title":{"rendered":"Choose to Sing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Another Year of Choices <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By Barbara Dahlgren<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Choose-to-Sing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3386\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Choose-to-Sing-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"Choose to Sing\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Choose-to-Sing-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Choose-to-Sing-600x407.jpg 600w, https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Choose-to-Sing.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of us love to sing.\u00a0 When we\u2019re alone in our Honda Civics we crank that music up loud, sing to the top of our lungs, bob our heads to the rhythm and \u201cshake it off, shake it off\u201d like we\u2019re at a Taylor Swift concert.\u00a0 Then we make eye contact with the person in the BMW next to us and get all embarrassed.\u00a0 Well\u2026 I\u2019d rather sing and get caught than not to sing at all.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so you can\u2019t carry a tune and singing\u2019s not your thing, but you can still make a joyful noise. (Psalm 100:1) Psalm 98:4 says, \u201cMake a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth\u2026\u201d\u00a0 It even says, \u201c\u2026make a loud noise and rejoice and sing praise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Music and\/or singing is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible.\u00a0 The Psalms teach us that music was used to offer thanks, to praise and to worship God, but it was used for other purposes as well.\u00a0 It was used to\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Soothe the soul (1 Samuel 16:23)<\/li>\n<li>Stir up the gift of prophesy (2 Kings 3:15)<\/li>\n<li>Inspire (2 Chronicles 20:21-22)<\/li>\n<li>Celebrate (Ezra 3:11)<\/li>\n<li>Express love (Song of Solomon 1-8)<\/li>\n<li>Teach God&#8221;s Word (Colossians 3:16)<\/li>\n<li>Release power of God (Acts 16:25-26)<\/li>\n<li>Etch the mighty power of God in our memories (Exodus 15:1)<\/li>\n<li>And much more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yes, music is powerful!\u00a0 Today, studies show that music can\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Affect your mood<\/li>\n<li>Alter buying habits<\/li>\n<li>Make you work more efficiently<\/li>\n<li>Relieve pain<\/li>\n<li>Reduce stress<\/li>\n<li>Increase stress<\/li>\n<li>Affect your eating habits<\/li>\n<li>Enhance athletic performance<\/li>\n<li>Teach children<\/li>\n<li>Help stroke patients regain speech<\/li>\n<li>Decrease stuttering<\/li>\n<li>And much more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>God created music and it is good. While it\u2019s true that man has polluted the good things God created, it doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t still enjoy music the way God intended.\u00a0 Every song we listen to doesn\u2019t need to have religious overtones, but we would be better off staying away from music that incites conflict or promotes negative feelings.\u00a0 We know those attitudes do not come from God.\u00a0 Music can reflect moods, but it can influence moods as well.\u00a0 So we should think about what we listen to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/God-Sings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3388\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/God-Sings.jpg\" alt=\"God Sings\" width=\"143\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/God-Sings.jpg 250w, https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/God-Sings-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consider this\u2026 God sings!\u00a0 Zephaniah 3:7 tells us God rejoices over us with singing.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if God breaks out in song when He thinks about us, just like in a musical, but I love how the Living Bible paraphrases this verse. It says, \u201cIs that a joyous choir I hear? \u00a0No, it is the Lord himself exulting over you in happy song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What about us?\u00a0 When we think about God do we sing a happy song.\u00a0 Perhaps we should. \u00a0And when we do, there\u2019s nothing wrong with pumping up the volume once in a while \u2013 especially if we can\u2019t carry a tune.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suggestions for practicing this choice\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t judge others based on their music preferences.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t presume God likes what you like and dislikes what you dislike when it comes to music. \u00a0In other words, don\u2019t set up your standards as God\u2019s standards.\u00a0 There is nothing wrong with having likes and dislikes, but remember that even God enjoys a \u201cloud\u201d song once in a while.
