{"id":3202,"date":"2015-12-06T09:00:49","date_gmt":"2015-12-06T15:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/?p=3202"},"modified":"2015-08-25T17:08:04","modified_gmt":"2015-08-25T22:08:04","slug":"choose-to-be-a-giver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/?p=3202","title":{"rendered":"Choose to Be a Giver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A Year of Choices<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By Barbara Dahlgren<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/No-one-has-ever-become-poor-by-giving..jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3203\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/No-one-has-ever-become-poor-by-giving..jpg\" alt=\"No one has ever become poor by giving.\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/No-one-has-ever-become-poor-by-giving..jpg 300w, https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/No-one-has-ever-become-poor-by-giving.-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/strong>Scriptures say it is more blessed to give than receive. \u00a0(Acts 20:35)\u00a0 How many of us are givers?<\/p>\n<p>At first we may think scriptures about giving only refer to giving money to the church.\u00a0 While it\u2019s true that many passages do speak of this kind of stewardship, the biblical principle of giving runs much deeper \u2013 such as giving cheerfully and generously of everything God has given us.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Old Testament times people were expected to give 10% or a tithe of everything they earned back to God.\u00a0 In the New Testament they were encouraged to give, but no fixed amount was given. \u00a0They were exhorted to give according to how God had prospered them or how much they loved God.\u00a0 The decision was theirs to make.\u00a0 However, they should bear two things in mind.\u00a0\u00a0 They should give cheerfully, not out of a sense of obligation or reluctance.\u00a0 (2 Corinthians 9:7)\u00a0 And they should give generously because if we \u201csow sparingly\u201d we \u201creap sparingly.\u201d\u00a0 (2 Corinthians 9:6)\u00a0 \u00a0In other words, we shouldn\u2019t expect God to be generous with us if we aren\u2019t generous with others.\u00a0 This applies in all areas of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>God expects us to give to others because God has given to us! \u00a0Every gift and blessing we have comes from God and God expects us to share them all with others. (James 1:7)\u00a0 Jesus gave instructions to His disciples:\u00a0 \u201c\u2026freely you have received, freely give.\u201d (Matthew 10:8)\u00a0 When we share what God has given us with others, it glorifies God.<\/p>\n<p>Giving is a basic biblical principle for every aspect of our lives.\u00a0 We should be giving to God, plus we should be giving and sharing what God has given us with others.<\/p>\n<p>What can we give to God who has everything?\u00a0 Here are some ideas\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our love<\/li>\n<li>Our trust<\/li>\n<li>Our thanks<\/li>\n<li>Our praise and worship<\/li>\n<li>Our bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What have we freely received from God that we can share with others?\u00a0 Here are some ideas\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The good news about Jesus Christ<\/li>\n<li>Acceptance<\/li>\n<li>Joy<\/li>\n<li>Peace<\/li>\n<li>Patience<\/li>\n<li>Kindness<\/li>\n<li>Comfort<\/li>\n<li>Forgiveness<\/li>\n<li>Hope<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What can we give to others?\u00a0 Here are some ideas\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our time<\/li>\n<li>Our talents<\/li>\n<li>Our energy<\/li>\n<li>Benefit of the doubt<\/li>\n<li>Our prayers<\/li>\n<li>A smile<\/li>\n<li>Encouragement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m sure we can all add to these lists.<\/p>\n<p>Consider this old adage\u2026 We make a living by what we get out of life but we make a life by what we give.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that givers improve their overall mental health, have a more positive outlook and improve relationships with others.\u00a0 So be a giver.\u00a0 It\u2019s a win\/win\/win scenario.\u00a0 It\u2019s good for you, it\u2019s good for others, and God loves it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tis-the-season-to-give.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-3204\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tis-the-season-to-give-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tis the season to give\" width=\"229\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tis-the-season-to-give-294x300.jpg 294w, https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tis-the-season-to-give.jpg 392w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Suggestions for practicing this choice\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you woke up this morning, give God a little praise and thanks!<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer in your community.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be a daily commitment.\u00a0 Perhaps you can help once a week or once a month.<\/li>\n<li>Smile at every person you meet.\u00a0 If you are feeling especially generous go ahead and say, \u201cHi!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Christmas is coming.\u00a0 Why not sponsor a Giving Tree gift or angel from the Salvation Army angel tree, have your family lead carols at a nursing home, participate in Operation Christmas Child or a One Warm Coat drive, help with a Christmas food drive \u2013 the list is endless?\u00a0 Just go online and you\u2019ll find a myriad of ways you and your family can give to others this year!<\/li>\n<li>Remember these words of Anne Frank:\u00a0 \u201cNo one has ever become poor by giving.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Year of Choices By Barbara Dahlgren \u00a0Scriptures say it is more blessed to give than receive. \u00a0(Acts 20:35)\u00a0 How many of us are givers?
