{"id":317,"date":"2011-01-02T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-02T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/?p=317"},"modified":"2010-12-19T18:08:26","modified_gmt":"2010-12-20T00:08:26","slug":"for-auld-lang-syne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/?p=317","title":{"rendered":"For Auld Lang Syne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Doesn\u2019t it strike you a wee bit funny that Americans usher in the New Year singing a Scottish song?\u00a0 There we were on New Year\u2019s Eve singing, \u201cFor auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne.\u00a0 We\u2019ll take a cup of kindness, yet, for auld lang syne.\u201d\u00a0 I had to wonder \u2013 what does it mean?\u00a0 So I tried to find out\u2026\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuld Lang Syne\u201d actually means \u201cold long ago\u201d and Scottish poet, Robert Burns, supposedly composed this little ditty.\u00a0 Some say he actually found the old song and restored it, adding some bits and pieces of his own.\u00a0 Whatever!\u00a0 The fact is that even with this knowledge you still can\u2019t understand it, except for the part where we take a cup of kindness which most of us interpret to mean a good stiff drink.\u00a0 If you have enough of those you don\u2019t care what the song means.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?\u201d\u00a0 Well should they?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I have some people I\u2019d like to forget.\u00a0 \u201cShould old acquaintance be forgot in days of \u2018old long ago?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Beats me!\u00a0 Should they?\u00a0 \u201cFor auld lang syne, my dear\u201d means for old long ago, my dear.\u00a0 How old long ago are we talking about here?\u00a0 Is it one year, two years, or ten years?\u00a0 \u201cFor auld lang syne.\u201d\u00a0 This is repeated in case we didn\u2019t get that we were actually talking about old, long ago the first time we sang it.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ll take a cup of kindness, yet.\u201d\u00a0 Ah, the part we think we understand.\u00a0 Belly up to the bar everyone and have a couple of belts for \u201cauld lang syne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We Americans love to sing songs we don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 Witness the popularity of \u201cLouie, Louie, oh no, we gotta go now&#8230;yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t even think the Kingsmen know what it means and they\u2019re the ones who sang it originally.\u00a0 Yet it has been the theme song of high schools, fraternities, sororities, and even a state.\u00a0 It\u2019s been used in countless movies, advertising campaigns, and political rallies.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What about the song \u201cDoes anyone really know what time it is?\u00a0 Does anybody really care?\u201d by Chicago.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really care what time it is but I sing it anyway.\u00a0 And let\u2019s not forget the \u201cHorse with No Name\u201d that\u2019s in the desert feelin\u2019 no pain by America.\u00a0 They had time to write a song but couldn\u2019t give the horse a name?\u00a0 Go figure!\u00a0 And just who is that someone who left the \u201ccake out in the rain?\u201d\u00a0 Because \u201cI don\u2019t think that I can take it, \u2018cause it took so long to bake it and I\u2019ll never have that recipe again!\u201d\u00a0 I only have three words to say to that.\u00a0 Buy a COOKBOOK!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of my personal favorites is \u201cDrop Kick Me Jesus through the Goal Posts of Life.\u201d\u00a0 (Yes, it is a song!)\u00a0 The sentence structure is good but what does it mean?<\/p>\n<p>One thing I\u2019ve learned through the years is that I don\u2019t have to fully understand everything to appreciate it.\u00a0 The Bible is like that, too.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to understand the book of Revelation to appreciate the fact that Jesus came and died for your sins.\u00a0 Salvation isn\u2019t based on what you know as much as who you know and your belief in Him.\u00a0 Jesus!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0So everyone sing the second verse of <em>Auld Lang Syne<\/em> with me.\u00a0 All together now!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cAnd there&#8217;s a hand, my trusty fiere,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And gie&#8217;s a hand o&#8217;
