It\u2019s a way of saying, \u201cI am important because of who I know.\u201d Of course it might be difficult working names like Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart or President Obama into the conversation and making it sound like we really know them.<\/p>\n<p>The poor man\u2019s way to drop names is by association, sort of like six degrees of separation. Some examples of this are brought out in the book <em>Elvis Presley\u2019s Pharmacist Was My Sunday School Teacher<\/em> by Mr. Whitekeys. Real people share their documented, remote connections to fame. Some of my favorites are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI personally know the brother-in-law\u2019s cousin\u2019s mother of the doctor of veterinary medicine that spayed Chelsea Clinton\u2019s cat, Socks.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMy best friend\u2019s step brother\u2019s next door neighbor\u2019s swimming coach\u2019s son was William Shatner\u2019s gardener\u2019s daughter\u2019s best friend.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI used to carpool a kid whose mother\u2019s father embalmed Babe Ruth (after he died).\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMy hairdresser\u2019s sister\u2019s brother-in-law\u2019s grandmother was the lady in the \u2018Where\u2019s the Beef?\u2019 commercials.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMy ex-girlfriend was puked on by Kurt Cobain at a concert.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMy mom\u2019s uncle\u2019s wife\u2019s sister\u2019s brother-in-law is Garth Brooks\u2019s uncle.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMy third grade teacher was Liberace\u2019s aunt.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Are we desperate for fame, or what?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some people like to drop the name of Jesus. This may work fine here on earth but might not get us into the kingdom of heaven unless we actually know him. Matthew 7:21 says, \u201cNot every one that says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When we get to the Pearly Gates Saint Peter may say, \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a personal friend of Billy Graham. I went golfing with him just the other day and died when I got hit with a golf ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, really? Who else do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I know Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do? Prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy next door neighbor\u2019s brother\u2019s aunt\u2019s doctor\u2019s receptionist is a Christian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saint Peter might say, \u201cHmmmmm?????\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You see, we might drop a name or two to get to the Pearly Gates, but we won\u2019t enter in unless we truly know and have a relationship with Jesus.
