{"id":1122,"date":"2012-05-25T09:00:14","date_gmt":"2012-05-25T14:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/?p=1122"},"modified":"2012-05-25T10:43:54","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T15:43:54","slug":"just-a-common-soldier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbdahlgren.com\/?p=1122","title":{"rendered":"The Final Inspection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of Memorial Day I thought I would share this poem \u2013 a tribute to all the soldiers who know that the cost of freedom is not free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Soliders2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1127\" title=\"Soliders\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barbdahlgren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Soliders2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1 align=\"center\">The Final Inspection\u00a0<\/h1>\n<p align=\"center\">(Author Unknown)<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Soldier stood and faced God,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Which must always come to pass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">He hoped his shoes were shining,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Just as brightly as his brass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cStep forward now, Soldier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">How shall I deal with you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Have you always turned the other cheek?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To My Church have you been true?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The soldier squared his shoulders and said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cNo, Lord, I guess I ain\u2019t,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Because those of us who carry guns,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Can&#8217;t always be a saint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;ve had to work most Sundays,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And at times my talk was tough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And sometimes I&#8217;ve been violent,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Because the world is awfully rough.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But I never passed a cry for help,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Though at times I shook with fear,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And sometimes, God, forgive me,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;ve wept unmanly tears.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I know I don&#8217;t deserve a place<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Among the people here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They never wanted me around,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Except to calm their fear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If you&#8217;ve a place for me here, Lord,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It needn&#8217;t be so grand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I never expected or had too much,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But if you don&#8217;t, I&#8217;ll understand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">There was a silence all around the throne,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Where the saints had often trod,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As the Soldier waited quietly,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For the judgment of his God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cStep forward now, you Soldier<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You&#8217;ve borne your burdens well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Walk peacefully on Heaven&#8217;s street,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You&#8217;ve done your time in Hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of Memorial Day I thought I would share this poem \u2013 a tribute to all the soldiers who know that the cost of freedom is not free.
